Ventilation
The North Harbour Table Tennis stadium is not just a large hall. It was purpose-built for table tennis (and other sports). In addition to its under-sprung floor—which is kinder on our knee and ankle joints—the stadium has a built-in ventilation system.
Here’s how it works. First, look up at the centre of the ceiling.
Running the whole length of the stadium’s ceiling is a vent to the open air above. Warm air rises from the stadium and escapes to the outside through this vent.
The profile of the roof looks like this
Now look along the outside walls. You can see some slats that allow fresh air to come in from outside. The whole air mass of the stadium circulates from the walls to the roof without the need of air-conditioning machinery, which would affect the flight of balls or shuttles.
